Leyla: Literature & Writing

Literature & Writing Tutor

Background
I was born in New Jersey and have lived in Minnesota since 2010 (the winters have grown on me!). I graduated from Macalester College with a double major in English Literature and Education, with a minor in Classics. I then went to the University of Minnesota’s master’s and licensure program, where I got my teaching license in Secondary Communication, Arts, and Literature. I taught high school Language Arts for three years before deciding to embark on the next leg of my journey – getting my Ph.D. in Education. I am studying Literacy Education in the U of M’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Free Time
I enjoy playing piano, drawing, reading novels, and watching documentaries! I also love taking walking holidays like Bilbo, and throwing super elaborate themed dinners.

Goals
I am interested in the healing potential of literature for both students and educators. What would it be like if books were consistently a source of joy and/or catharsis? I am passionate about authentic caring, and believe that emotional wellness is central to academic success.
